Last week in Montreal, a lot of people were getting sick toward the end of the convention, the usual Con Crud that starts to spread when germs congregate from all over the world and then spread through a sleep-deprived Con population that has been living for a week on caffeine and stale danish. As a YA author, I was thrilled at the Hugo Awards ceremony tonight to notice that two of the five finalists for best novel were YA books. Neil Gaiman was nominated for The Graveyard Book, and Cory Doctorow was nominated for Little Brother. Cory did not wear the Ducky necklace with his tux.

This morning I moderated a panel on Paranormal Teen Romance novels. Finally, I had a room in which every microphone on the stage was actually working. Unfortunately, we had four panelists and two audience members. None of whom were the teenagers the program was primarily aimed at. Neil Gaiman is a rock star. The man can't step into an elevator without being mugged by adoring fans. At one of the parties here, someone was giving out bottles of soda with his face printed on the labels. I hardly know him, but he seems like a sweet guy - a good sport who's willing to put up with a lot in order to please his readers. And obviously ( Read more... )

I'm finally getting around to posting something about WorldCon. A few thoughts so far:

Yippee! The editor of the Stargate books responded to my e-mail and would be happy to look at a proposal for a book. (Thanks, klingonguy for the contact info!) The editor answered a few questions for me and was quite encouraging. Now, to write that proposal....
